There’s a few very important but simple rules on making smoothies. Follow these suggestions and you’ll get the best quality smoothies in the shortest time possible.

1) Always place the softer fruits & vegetables in the bottom of the blender jug or pitcher and place any ice or frozen fruits & vegetables at the top. You can place all the ingredients in the pitcher at once. When you place the softer produce and liquids (juices or milks) in the bottom, the blades will purify the soft items and the liquids easily, creating a slurry that the hard items (ice, hard vegetables or fruits) can then more easily slip into and blend. If you pack too much hard fruit or veggies in to the bottom, the blades will pulverize the hard fruit easily, but the softer fruit may not drop down into the blades because the hard pulverized produce hasn’t become a slurry.

2) You usually add ice as an ingredient to cool down the smoothie or to create the pureed frozen viscosity of the drink. If you are using frozen fruits and vegetables instead of fresh, you’ll already have the frozen viscosity taken care of, so you’ll not need to use as much ice as the recipe calls for if at all.

3) You can always adjust your smoothies after you’ve blended everything. Take a small taste and make sure the flavor and viscosity is right. You can drop a few more ice cubes in to chill it more or add more fruit to sweeten it up.

4) Each Native Juicer Commercial Blender comes with a plastic tamper stick. This is the easiest way to assure you will have the quickest and most completely blended smoothie possible. Some blender manufacturers suggest that you let the blender do all the work and keep the blender on for 2-4 minutes to get the smoothie completely blended. Blenders are loud. With a tamper stick pushing down on the ingredients like the pros do, you’ll have every smoothie perfectly blended in no longer than 30 seconds flat…..!

5) Peel and slice ripe bananas and other fresh fruits when they are in season and store in your freezer. Bananas are used frequently in smoothie recipes, so keep lots of frozen banana pieces in the freezer. Whole frozen bananas tend to take a bit longer to blend, so it’s best to freeze them in pieces.

6) Finally, keep good care of your blender. Rinse the pitcher quickly after use. Fruits and veggies will dry quickly and become more difficult to clean thoroughly soon after making a smoothie. Wash the pitcher by filling 1/3 full with warm water (and a tsp of dishwashing liquid) and turn the blender on for 5 seconds. Rinse with clean water after that.

½ Frozen banana peeled and sliced (need to prepare this the day before)
2 Tbsp powdered protein supplement
1½ Tbsp flaxseed (ground or whole)
1 tsp local honey
½ C Frozen Strawberries

2 Whole Oranges (peeled and seeded… the white pith is very nutritious)
Zest of ½ the orange
1 Banana (previously frozen and sliced)
5-6 Ice Cubes
Water (enough to make the smoothie the consistency you like)
